More Than a Designer: How SIG Gained a Whole Studio

Six creatives. 29 branches, three sub-brands.

All handled cost and time effectively by one Studio

INTRODUCTION

A single in-house designer is one skill set, one pair of hands, and one person's holiday away from everything grinding to a halt. It is a bottleneck most marketing teams know well, and when SIG lost its divisional designer, it faced the usual choice: hire another one or find a better way.

SIG found a better way. Its Insulation and Drylining division now works with a whole studio instead of a single hire, a team of six creatives at Telescope who know the SIG brands inside out and turn round everything from a trade counter flyer to a full conference, across 29 branches and three sub-brands. For the cost of one design resource, a marketing team of three has the reach of a room full of specialists. Holding it all together is our product information management and digital asset management system, our PIM and DAM, which keeps every logo, template and asset in one managed place and every piece on brand.

A SINGLE HIRE BECAME A FULL CREATIVE TEAM

SIG is a major supplier of specialist insulation and building products. Its Insulation and Drylining division runs a small marketing team, three people, supporting 29 branches and trade counters across the country. When its internal design resource moved on, it had a constant flow of artwork to produce, from event flyers to social posts, and no single hire who could cover all of it consistently and at pace. It needed a studio that could learn the brand inside out, produce a wide range of material to a reliable standard, and turn work around quickly.

An external design studio gives a marketing team access to a full range of dynamic, creative skills extremely cost and time effectively. When one person is away, the work still moves. When a job needs a skill one designer wouldn’t have, someone in the studio has it. A single in-house designer is one skill set; a studio is a room of specialists, and SIG can call on it whenever it needs to.

The relationship began with a brand refresh. SIG’s group guidelines were well established, but the division needed its own clearer identity and a practical way to produce artwork without rebuilding it from scratch each time. We refined the logo variations, fonts, text hierarchy, colour palettes, photography and branded graphic devices, then built a library of templates and branded assets. That toolkit is what lets on-brand material be produced quickly and consistently now.

PIM AND DAM KEEP EVERY ASSET ON BRAND

The PIM and DAM are what keep it all in order. Every logo, template, image and approved asset lives in one managed place, with online proofing built in, so every version of a job sits together with a clear record of who reviewed it and what changed. On work spanning 29 branches, three sub-brands and many rounds of amends, that is what lets a six-person studio hold three areas of the construction market to one consistent standard.

ONE SUPPLIER COVERING BRAND, PRINT, DIGITAL, SOCIAL AND EVENTS

The range is the real story, because it is one supplier covering ground that would otherwise mean several. The studio produces digital event flyers and trade counter invitations, posters and signage, internal documentation and brochures, all created to the brand guidelines and signed off by the SIG team. It works across the core SIG identity and its sub-brands, including Kitsons Technical Insulation (covering HVAC, High Temp, Industrial, Fire Protection, and M&E First Fix), and Speedline (Drywall Systems), and we have fed into the division’s recent website development too, contributing branded elements and design input.

Since 2024 we have produced over 200 separately briefed projects and developed 20+ Branded Templates, increasing efficiency.

FROM FLYERS TO A FULL CONFERENCE: ONE BRIEF, NO STITCHING TOGETHER

The division’s Six Nations client and supplier hospitality shows how far that stretches. For one event, the studio produces the freestanding branded backdrop of the kind you see behind interviews at sporting fixtures, along with table plans, charity posters, guest speaker question cards, and the quizzes and games that keep the event moving. We have supported the annual conference twice too, including a themed event logo and the full suite of material around it. Delivering all of that from a single brief, rather than briefing separate suppliers, saves a small team a lot of running around, and everything looks like it belongs to the same brand, because it does.

SOCIAL AND ANIMATION, HANDLED

Social and animation have become one of the fastest-growing services SIG draws on. When the division’s internal social resource moved on, the work came to us: social content including animated posts, briefed around product launches and new ranges, published mainly on LinkedIn. This is now handled to a professional standard, with animation adding the visual draw a static post cannot. It is a capability many clients don’t expect a studio to offer.

WHAT IT ADDS UP TO FOR SIG

A full creative team in one partner, covering brand, print, digital, events, social and animation across the whole division and its sub-brands. And a PIM and DAM keeping every asset organised, current and on brand behind the scenes.

IN THEIR WORDS

“As a small marketing team, we need partners we can rely on. Telescope feels less like an external agency and more like an extension of our team, helping us deliver everything from branch campaigns and supplier activity to major events, website projects and social content, all while ensuring our brands remain consistent and professional.”

Kelly Quarmby, head of marketing, SIG Insulation and Drylining

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can an external studio keep everything on brand across multiple sub-brands?

Yes. We built SIG's brand toolkit and templates and hold every asset in our PIM and DAM, so a team of six creatives produces every piece to the same guidelines, whether for the core brand, Kitsons or Speedline.

Is an external studio only worth it for large marketing teams?

No. SIG's division is supported by a team of three. An external studio suits any team with more design work than one internal hire can handle, or who need a wider range of skills than one person can offer.

What kinds of work can an external studio take on?

For SIG, that spans brand identity, brochures, signage, trade counter and event flyers, internal documents, social and animated content, event and conference collateral, website design input and online proofing.
